On Friday, August 30, the New York State Department of Financial Services announced an updated employee contribution rate for NY Paid Family Leave benefits effective January 1, 2020. With a rate increase from 0.153% to 0.270% and an increase of the NY State Average Weekly Wage from $1,357.11 to $1,401.17, the new maximum employee annual contribution for the upcoming year is capped at $196.72. Employees will receive a benefit of 60% of their Average Weekly Wage up to a maximum of $840.70 per week. The maximum length of paid leave however will remain at 10 weeks.

What circumstances are eligible for Paid Family Leave?

Employees can submit claims for Paid Family Leave in order to:

  • Bond with a newly born, adopted or fostered child within the first 12 months of birth or placement.
  • Care for a spouse, domestic partner, child/stepchild, parent/stepparent, parent-in-law, grandparent, or grandchild with a serious health condition.
  • Assist a spouse, domestic partner, child/stepchild, parent/stepparent or parent-in-law when they are deployed abroad on active military service.
