JFA Fundraiser for Captain

July 13, 2020 – CAPTAIN Community Human Services (CHS) is humbled to announce a Matching Gift Fundraiser offered by Jaeger and Flynn Associates (JFA) in support of CAPTAIN CHS’s Street Outreach for Homeless Youth and Safe Harbour Anti-Human Trafficking programs. The campaign is being launched in lieu of JFA’s annual Grip It ‘N Rip It Golf Tournament.

“This is the definition of community,” said Sue Catroppa, CAPTAIN CHS Executive Director. “Jaeger and Flynn are showing what we mean when we say we’re Saratoga Strong by following through even when the current crisis has forced the cancelation of the tournament.”

The 17th Annual Grip It ‘N Rip It Golf Tournament was originally rescheduled for August 21st, but, citing the current social distancing recommendations and concerns for the health and safety of participants, JFA chose to cancel this year’s event.

“We look forward to this tournament every year,” said Tom Flynn, co-owner of Jaeger and Flynn Associates. “It was a difficult and disappointing decision, but we knew our first and foremost priority must be for the health and safety of our golfers, supporters, staff and volunteers.”

The annual charity tournament is the area’s most anticipated golf outing of the year, raising over $20,000 annually for local nonprofits and bringing together nearly 150 golfers for a day of sport, fun, good food and good company. Held yearly at Hiland Country Club in Queensbury, the event boasts major sponsorship from the area’s top insurance companies.

“In canceling this event, we knew it meant a financial blow to CAPTAIN CHS and especially the services for homeless kids in Saratoga County, which CAPTAIN has been supporting through individual and business donations alone when the Federal government failed to fund any New York State programs in 2019,” continued Flynn. “Together with my partner Kurt Jaeger, Jaeger and Flynn Associates has put together matching funds for the first $10,000 of this fundraising campaign.”

Current sponsors of the now-canceled event will have the opportunity to apply their funds to this campaign and continue to reap the benefits of sponsored, now modified. 100% of sponsorships now go directly to services without the expense of the tournament.

“These funds will allow the over 2,000 homeless or at-risk youth in Saratoga County access to our services, including basic needs items, emergency shelter, and case management to prevent and end the cycle of homelessness,” continued Catroppa. “Without Jaeger and Flynn and the many businesses and individuals that support this event, and now this campaign, more kids would become victims of human trafficking – something that happens all too often right here in Saratoga County.”

According to research from Voices of Youth Count: Understanding and ending youth homelessness, a project of Chapin Hall at the University of Chicago, economic changes like we’re seeing today have a profoundly destabilizing effect on disadvantaged families, and can accelerate a youth’s trajectory into homelessness.

“We know that teens are approached by traffickers or drug dealers within 48 hours of homelessness,” said Catroppa. “That’s why you see our mobile team out on the streets and answering the call 24/7.”
